Boston Municipal Court - Brighton Division

The Boston Municipal Court handles civil and criminal cases that are brought in Brighton. The Court adjudicates over crimes with a potential punishment of 5-year jail term and crimes that do not require incarceration in state prison upon conviction. It also hears civil matters not exceeding $50,000 in value, small claims cases not more than $7,000, and specialized proceedings. Suffolk County Superior Court

The Suffolk County Superior Court has general jurisdiction over Brighton civil claims involving up to $50,000 money damages, exclusive original jurisdiction over first-degree murders, and original jurisdiction over other criminal matters. The court recorded a total of 1,322 criminal case entries during the 2020 fiscal year. Supreme Judicial Court (SJC)

The SJC has authority over appeals of all Brighton cases from the Appeals Court, and it has exclusive appellate jurisdiction over first-degree murder cases. Besides hearing cases, it also coordinates the operations of the other courts serving the neighborhood. During the 2018 fiscal year, the SJC recorded 194 case entries and dismissed 14 cases.

Appeals Court

As a court of general appellate jurisdiction, the Appeals Court reviews decisions made by any of the trial court departments concerning matters emanating in Brighton. It also hears appeals of final determinations from the Appellate Tax Board, the Industrial Accident Board, and the Commonwealth Employment Relations Board. The court, however, has no jurisdiction over first-degree murder appeals. Within the 2020 fiscal year, it heard a total of 736 criminal case appeals.
